Descrizione dell'intervento

Il progetto prevede la riqualificazione della Piazza Mazzini, che ricopre un’estensione complessiva di circa 7.800 mq. Nella Piazza ha sede, fra l’altro, la Stazione Ferroviaria e il terminal bus del TPL ed è all’interno dell’area individuata come Centro Commerciale Naturale di via Maestra. Il progetto nasce per restituire a questo spazio urbano la funzione sociale, come luogo aggregante e culturale e ad aumentarne la vivibilità soprattutto in termini di pedonabilità, depotenziando l’invasività del traffico motorizzato in modo da ricreare e potenziare il collegamento naturale con il centro storico e le aree pedonali in esso presenti, pur nel rispetto e mantenimento delle esigenze legate alla viabilità stessa, specie di quella legata al servizio pubblico, nonché al mantenimento di adeguate e strutturate aree per la sosta. Pertanto la piazza viene completamente destrutturata per poi essere assemblata in modo nuovo, moderno. Si crea uno spazio unico, libero, aperto, a carattere prevalentemente pedonale. Uno spazio da vivere, non solo da attraversare distrattamente, uno spazio che si presta a molteplici funzioni invertendo così gli ordini: la piazza come elemento principale e la strada come accessorio a margine che però ben distribuisce il traffico. Per sottolineare la centralità degli spazi oggetto di riqualificazione e il loro inserimento diretto all’interno del “cuore storico” della città, verrà utilizzata una pavimentazione in pietra, che rimanda a quella già presente nel centro ed utilizzata negli interventi di recupero messi in atto nello scorso decennio. Il progetto, inoltre, prevede una ridefinizione integrale della conformazione spaziale della piazza. La viabilità di accesso alla stessa da Via Trento viene collocata a lato, mantenendo però un ampio marciapiede di circa 6 mt di fronte agli edifici e separando lo stesso dalla zona carrabile tramite una fascia alberata, che a valle si riallinea con le alberature esistenti.

Description of the operation

The project involves the redevelopment of Mazzini Square, an area of approximately 7,800 square meters where they are located, among other things, the railway station and the TPL bus terminal and that falls within the Natural Shopping Center. The aim of the project is to give back to this urban space, central to the city, a social and aggregating function. This means increasing the liveability in terms of pedestrian traffic, weakening the invasiveness of motorized traffic and enhancing the natural connection with the historic center, while maintaining the needs linked to traffic and parking. Hence a modern square design with a unique, free, open space, mainly pedestrian. A space to be lived and not only to be crossed distractedly, where the 'square' becomes the main element and the road is an accessory in the margins, but it also distributes the traffic. All the spaces will be redefined and those destined for socialization will be enhanced and increased also through the care of the materials, color and furnishing choices, stone paving (which refers to the one already present in the historical center). In the upper part there will be a large green area equipped with pedestrian paths. The green areas and the parking areas will be reconfigured in order to have a well-conceived and visually distinct distribution of space according to the different functions. The road network will also be redesigned with the access road on the right side with a wide sidewalk of about seven meters in front of the buildings and a tree-lined strip to separate it from the road that ends at a roundabout on the station side to allow access to two side parking lots, as well as the approach and maneuver of public transport. The access lanes to the two parking lots will be spaced from the building, in order to allow the construction of a paved square for pedestrian use only. The continuity with the upper part will be ensured by raised crossings which will be emphasized by paving the pedestrian function. Beyond the paved portion in front of the station, the square will have a large, semicircle-shaped space, separated from the area below by a short, sloping stairway. In this space all the elements will call attention to the center where the Resistance monument will be located. The war memorial monument will be relocated in the new garden, in the upper part (first terracing). Between the paved space of the square and the green, a satin fountain will be inserted, as an element of mediation between the two areas.
